Exploring The Art Smart Center
November 10 10:09 AM

Art is more than just putting crayon to paper. It’s even more than pipe cleaners, googly eyes and a ton of glue, although that does sound like a lot of fun.

Think of art as a whole-body experience and you’ll start to understand what’s happening at the Art Smart Center here at the Omaha Children’s Museum. The Art Smart Center has something for movers and shakers as well as the storytellers and imaginers. It’s the place to take kids when you want to help them explore and express art in a multitude of ways, and they’re going to have a great time while doing it too!

Sketch Town

There’s nothing like coloring a two-dimensional picture and seeing it come to life on the big screen. At Sketch Town, kids choose a picture to color, scan it, then watch it appear on the interactive wall. They can watch UFOs fly through the air, trucks navigate the streets, or even a house they design show up in one of the neighborhoods.

Performing Arts

Everything you need to put on a show is provided in the Art Smart Center. Make-up, costumes, and of course Center Stage. Kids can use puppets to help tell their story, and they have a selection of digital backdrops. Even if they don’t care to put on a performance for the general public, it’s still fun to paint faces, try on costumes, or play with the puppets.

Moving with Light
Colored light moves across the stage in fantastic patterns and sets up the perfect space for kids to get moving! Dancing, chasing the lights, or just seeing what cool moves their bodies can make.

Tinker Lab

It’s always a wonderful feeling to take an idea and turn it into something amazing. With the right tools and materials, the Tinker Lab helps kids do just that (with the help of their grown-up). They can build, explore tools, and get a feel for creating something with their own two hands. Now that’s something to be proud of.

Paint Window
Find some space and add your own work of art to the paint window. It’s an actual window so you can see your creation from both sides. Kids can explore color, line, or anything else they want with the help of paint and a paintbrush. The vertical surface also provides a new painting experience for some kids. Smocks are provided to prevent paint from getting on their clothes.

Playing with Light
Combining building with color expression gives you the experience of planning and design. Have fun stacking different shaped blocks to see what shape and color combinations are most pleasing to the eye. Try monotone colors, explore complimentary colors, or use the full spectrum to highlight your creation. Kids can spend a lot of time exploring these elements.

Jump in and explore creative expression with your kids or just sit back and watch their imaginations come to life. There’s never a dull moment in the Art Smart Center.
