National Day of Making

Celebrating a Nation of Makers

Last week, the President declared June 18 the National Day of Making as he will be hosting the first ever Maker Faire at the White House!

The Maker Movement has been sweeping across the country encouraging everyone to be a maker, tinkerer, innovator or crafter. This movement has inspired Omaha Children’s Museum to get involved by creating their own Maker-Space exhibit. In this exhibit, children and families are able to use real materials and tools that encourage creativity and curiosity. Guests are able to tinker, repurpose, upcycle, take apart, put back together and anything else to make a discovery or creation all their own.

Since it’s opening last year, this space has been home to many maker-related events such as the Global Cardboard Challenge, Hour of Code, Making Outreach and more. Our Maker-Space has also been selected as a host site for Maker Corps mentors this summer – which means we have even more talented makers in the space to guide and motivate creativity in each of our guests.

The President wants to encourage us to “not just be consumers of things, but be makers of things.”

Omaha Children’s Museum is proud to participate in the National Day of Making with hands on, interactive making activities throughout the museum and special workshops in the Maker-Space on June 18. Join us to celebrate our Nation of Makers!

To help highlight National Day of Making, sign-up for our summer Maker-Camp between now and June 18 to receive $10 off! Put your tool belts on and get ready for a week of tinkering, making and fun during Maker-Camp! Campers will have the opportunity to explore making all things from textiles to electronics, wood working and more in a safe environment. Come learn about technology, engineering, art and mathematics in a fun and exciting new way! What will you make?

Read more about our Maker-Space and the wonderful crafts and activities the Maker Corps Mentors have been doing so far this summer!
